One would think that increased technology during food production meant an increase in food security and a decrease in possible food contamination. That is wrong. As seen in the article below, 149 children became sick after eating food from a caterer in Hialeah. After samples of the food were taken for examination, it was determined that staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP) was the cause for the outbreak. This tends to happen when food is contaminated or not properly refrigerated.
According to the food poisoning statistics webpage, there are 76 million food related illnesses in the US annually. 325,000 food related hospitalizations annually, and 5,000 annual deaths. If these numbers aren’t enough to change regulations and demand more transparency in the food industry, I don’t know what would be.
